The Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex broke out of narrow range in the afternoon and closed comfortably in the positive terrain as investors with risk appetite lapped up stocks from all the major sectoral indices barring metals space.
The Sensex ended at 17575.93, up 144.08 points or 0.83 per cent. The 30-share index touched a high of 17630.53 and low of 17382.70 in trade today.
The National Stock Exchange's Nifty ended at 5319, up 49.10 points or 0.93 per cent. The broader index touched a high of 5334.85 and low of 5255.55 intraday.
BSE Midcap Index was up 1.17 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 1.08 per cent higher.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index moved 1.70 per cent higher, BSE Healthcare Index gained 1.65 per cent and BSE FMCG Index moved 1.56 per cent higher. BSE Metal Index was down 1.44 per cent higher.
